Jump Rope

Physical Education Lesson Plan

S: Physical Education
T: Jump rope
O: 2nd grade: To practice and improve jump rope skills
3rd grade: To develop cardiovascular fitness through fun jump rope games
4th grade: To provide practice opportunities for basic individual jump rope skills
5th grade: To motivate and challenge students with jump rope activities
P: Teacher explanation and demonstration

Jump Rope

Each student will have his/her own jump rope. Jump rope task cards will be on display around the gym. Each student will be given a jump rope challenge card to mark off tricks as they complete them.

Jump rope tasks taught will be: forward jump, forward right foot, forward left foot, backward jump, backward right foot, backward left foot, moving forward jump, moving sideways jump right, moving sideways jump left, moving backward jump, jog in place, hot peppers, consecutive jumps, double bounce, single bounce, straddle, skier, hop, rocker, “X”, backward, bell, wounded duck, sideward, side swing, twister, criss-cross arms, hopscotch, heel to heel, front to back, heel toe, heel clicks, double under and 360 degree turn.

Students will choose partners and try a variety of different task with a partner. Some of those will be: side by side, face to face, face to back, back to back, 360 degree and jumper, moving train, two ropes turned by partners.

Students will have a chance to do long rope tricks while two other students and/or the teacher will turn the long rope. Some of these will be: front entries, backdoor entries, turnaround, touch ground, jumping jacks, two people jump, school, bounce a basketball, use a hula hoop.
